Phil Ruge-Jones earned his B.A. from Lawrence University, his M.Div. from Luther Seminary and his Ph.D. in systematic theology from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.
Phil is a storyteller, a writer, a teacher, and a person of faith who looks to find God in unexpected places. He has written, spoken, and collaborated extensively in the field of biblical storytelling. During almost two decades he taught a generation of young people to learn and tell biblical stories at Texas Lutheran University (where he achieved the rank of Professor). He has recently collaborated with ANKOSfilms to produce a digital storytelling of Mark’s Gospel called, I Tell You, This Is the Way It Is. In the winter of 2016, he moves to Wisconsin to join his storytelling wife in her new call, where they will enjoy geographic proximity to both of their university attending children, Luke and Luisa.
Dr. Ruge-Jones convokes the NBS Seminar, NBSI's small group of storytelling scholars and scholarly storytellers who get together each summer in order to see what happens. He is the gatherer of the popular "Scholarly Musings" for NBS and co-edited the book, The Bible in Ancient and Modern Media. He publishes a weekly on-line meme digitally bookmarked as #earlysermonseeds that is designed to help ministers prepare for next week’s preaching text. He found his favorite self-description on a bottle of wine, he “dialectically bridges sophistication and rusticity”, that is, he will speak to us of marvelous things with both feet on the ground.
